"Don't you two get it? You can't kill a god!"
—August Heart[src]

August Heart (August 16, 2021[1] - 2052[2]), nicknamed Godspeed by Lia Nelson, is a criminal speedster from 2049.

In a previous timeline, he used tachyons and Velocity 9 to gain super speed. He was stopped and imprisoned after murdering Lia.

In the current timeline, August became the archenemy of Bart West-Allen/Impulse and Nora West-Allen/XS after murdering Jay Garrick. By fracturing himself in time, August created dozens of duplicate Godspeeds and sent them to terrorize Team Flash. At some point, the clones split off into two factions, one faction that wanted to help August steal Barry Allen's speed and another faction that aimed to free themselves and kill August. Obsessed with speed, August traveled back in time to 2021, but lost his memory as a result. Thanks to Team Flash, he got it back before he a battle against the Flash and the Reverse-Flash and gets remanded to Iron Heights Penitentiary.

At some point after being imprisoned, August returned to the future after presumably escaping from prison and eventually died in 2052 during a fight with Impulse. Shortly before his demise, August was recruited by Cobalt Blue to join a legion consisting of the Reverse-Flash, Zoom and Savitar, and powered by Negative Speed Force to finally kill the Flash's team. Godspeed battled Virtue who used her powers to defeat him, allowing him to be returned to his native time period.

In 2049, August experimented with tachyons to give himself speed, presumably made a suit for himself as the speedster "Godspeed" and began stealing chemicals to recreate the Velocity 9 serum. August visited the Flash Museum where he saw how Zoom used Velocity 9, also meeting Nora West-Allen there.

Nora would go on to attempt to stop Godspeed's robberies, but he knocked Nora down the first time with a lightning bolt. Godspeed defeated Nora the second time in speed combat before he murdered Lia Nelson for destroying what he aimed to steal. His identity was exposed when his DNA was found inside Lia's body, providing the CCPD with the necessary evidence to obtain an arrest warrant.

After learning about his next target, Nora went to his next robbery where he was going to steal a device that would make his artificial powers permanent. There, Godspeed fought Nora and was tricked into getting in the way of radio waves that disrupted the various cocktails in his system. He was then taken into custody by the CCPD.[1]

The fourth clone of Godspeed.

After the defeat of two equivalents of Cicada altered Earth-1's timeline, "clones" of Godspeed appeared throughout the summer of 2019 and caused chaos throughout Central City on three separate occasions. After each defeat, each version of Godspeed was revealed to have actually been an impostor incapable of speech and making strange, modem-like noises.

A fourth attack by Godspeed took place on October 8th, 2019, and the impostor which was dubbed "G4" by Cisco Ramon before he was quickly apprehended by The Flash and sent to Iron Heights like the other three. With no further evidence at the time about who was behind these drones' powers or sending them off to cause havoc in Godspeed's name, Team Flash decided not to worry about the attacks for the time being.[3]

Anti-Monitor Crisis

During the Crisis of 2019, August and nearly everyone in the multiverse was killed in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, 2019,[4] but was restored a month later, after the seven Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.[5]

New multiverse

Origin

In Earth-Prime's timeline, August was a young physicist and desired to run faster than light. He created his own version of the Velocity formula and presumably made himself a suit. August soon realized that he'd never be fast enough without "infinite velocity" or "organic speed" no matter how fast he was. August later saw how irresponsible Impulse was and which he deemed unworthy of speed. August began coveting Impulse's speed, as having artificial speed was a "pale imitation" of being a speedster as he needed to frequently recharge his powers. In response to his jealousy, August became a personal enemy to Impulse to the point where their hate against each other was similar to the hate between the Flash and the Reverse-Flash. Eventually, August's hatred for Impulse became so intense that he, at some point, captured Jay Garrick and forced Impulse to watch him murdering Jay.[6][7]

Altered timeline

Thanks to the actions of Impulse and XS travelling back to 2021, a ripple effect was sent through the timeline that altered several moments in the timelines, with a major one being the circumstances following August's capture of Jay. In this timeline, Impulse managed to begin the fight with August before he murdered anyone, allowing Jay to escape. This change didn't effect much as it only managed to fan the flames of August's hatred of Impulse.[7]

Attack of the clones

In 2049, Godspeed fought Impulse and XS and was defeated. However, he escaped the sibling speedsters who chased him to the Flash Museum. Once there, Godspeed attempted to use the Cosmic Treadmill to open a wormhole, travel back in time and rewrite the past, gloating that the two speedsters weren't able to stop him.[6] He recklessly fractured himself in time, splitting his speed across dozens of clones of Godspeed that were scattered across the past while the "Prime" version lost his memory.[7]

Clones of Godspeed sporadically appeared in Central City, but were incapable of human speech and instead communicating through strange modem-like noises. They first appeared throughout 2019 on four separate occasions before being defeated each time. Each clone of Godspeed was placed in Iron Heights' meta-human wing.[8][9]

The fifth clone of Godspeed.

The fifth clone of Godspeed.

After the Crisis of 2019, a fifth clone of Godspeed came to Central City to obtain a source of speed from Team Flash. This clone of Godspeed went to S.T.A.R. Labs and attacked Barry Allen and Allegra Garcia. He stole a percentage of Barry's depleting speed before retreating thanks to Nash Wells's timely intervention. He went on to siphon the speed of the previous four clones of Godspeed, killing them while making himself much faster and stronger. He then demanded the Flash's speed and threatened to execute hostages to get it.

The Flash saved the civilians and fought this clone of Godspeed, but he was too fast and powerful. He claimed the Flash didn't deserve the speed, but "we" did. This clone of Godspeed had the upper hand until Pied Piper teamed up with the Flash to defeat him. Upon being placed in Iron Heights, he was interrogated. This clone of Godspeed said that he was sent by another who wanted "infinite velocity" before his voice started to make broken modem sounds like the previous clones of Godspeed did.[8]

The Godspeed Imperative

In 2021, the clones of Godspeed split into two fractions: one that wanted to help steal Barry's speed for the "Prime" version and one that aimed to free themselves by locating and killing August. The first group of clones ganged up on the Flash at a power plant before chasing at S.T.A.R. Labs which was contained by forcefield, although the clones of Godspeed were eventually able to disable.

The clones of Godspeed were suddenly overcome when Chester P. Runk arranged the Time Vault to pipe music all around, befuddling the clones of Godspeed while fighting the Flash, Frost and Chillblaine. One clone blasts into the Time Vault and disabled Gideon, but the Flash baits them all away before the second group arrived to save the Flash in the hopes of an alliance. Following this escalation, the two Godspeed factions started full on war fighting each other all over Central City.[9]

As the two fractions were fighting, a clone of Godspeed was running through Central City before being captured by The Flash and Spartan with an entropy trap. He was later put in the pipeline cell and didn't communicate with until he was sure that Barry could help him.

During the interrogation, the clone revealed that he knew Barry's secret identity as well as told Barry about the two factions of Godspeed and how he belonged to the group that seeks to live and do not follow August. After the hero refused to help, the clone of Godspeed destroyed the entropy trap and tried to go after Barry, but was stopped by Allegra so he escaped from the pipeline.

Eventually, the "Prime" version was found by Cecile Horton, Spartan and Frost. Due to being an amnesiac, August was taken to S.T.A.R. Labs, where Caitlin Snow administered a solution of dark matter to him. This enabled August to remember at least his name, but not enough to remember who he was before his arrival in 2021.[10]

The escalation of the Godspeed war and the arrival of Impulse and XS resulted in the two Godspeed factions briefly joining forces to attack which identified Impulse as the "adversary" by both fractions of Godspeed. The two young speedsters and the Flash used Chester's device on the clones of Godspeed which temporarily neutralized their speed, but the clones of Godspeed were able to quickly recharge and fight back to which Frost interrupted before the clones disappeared again.

Afterwards, several clones of Godspeed kidnapped Jay to Zauriel Cathedral, drawing Impulse in to confront the fraction that were holding the elder Flash hostage only to be simultaneously attacked by the group as the younger Flash and XS arrived on scene soon after. XS left to distract most of the clones, leaving one clone of Godspeed to face the Flash to face while holding and draining Impulse's speed. The lone Godspeed proclaimed Team Flash's defeat due to Impulse's recklessness before attacking. The Flash was able to phase through his attack and the clone of Godspeed, defeating them.

Ultimately, the clones of Godspeed which chased after XS arrived, prompting both Flashes to carry Impulse away from the scene albeit to no avail. The Godspeed army surrounded while the speedsters readied for a confrontation before Mecha-Vibe used an entropy-powered weapon to temporarily slow the army of Godspeed clones. Mecha-Vibe's attack didn't hold the clones of Godspeed off for long while XS was unable to wake up Impulse, causing Team Flash to retreat to S.T.A.R. Labs for better treatment.

August confronted by Barry.

August confronted by Barry.

Due the Godspeed war worsening, Barry's consciousness was projected into August's mind in hopes of helping him regain his memories. Barry was at Zauriel Cathedral which had been redecorated into Godspeed's sanctum which had August waiting to answer Barry's questions while thinking it was going to be fun for himself.[6]

August revealed to his background to Barry and was unfazed by the fact that two Godspeed factions were searching for him. Barry found out that August desired to permanently become a true speedster. August requested that either Barry give him "the gift he deserves" and he'll save Central City by reabsorbing his clones or refuse and August let the Godspeed clones destroy it, if not the entire world. Barry refused his request to which August projected Barry out of his mind.

Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, August was surprised to find out about his real identity and was horrified by the fact that he was a killer from the future, obsessed with taking speed and ruling the world. Panicked, he asked Cecile how he's supposed to live now since he now knows he's a "bad guy" despite wanting his memory and life back. Cecile reassured him that he doesn't have to be his previous self.

Final battle and defeat

Joe West and Kristen Kramer return to Central City to which a clone of Godspeed attacked Joe, but Kramer mimicked the clone of Godspeed's powers which were used to escape from the clone of Godspeed with Joe.

A group clones of Godspeed later battle with the two Flashes, XS, Impulse, The Flash and the Speed Force before Wavelength was able to charge the same device for earlier to neutralize the clones of Godspeed. Meanwhile, another group of clones of Godspeed dealt with Mecha-Vibe and Frost, but were unable to disrupt an entropy-equipped shield before disappearing again.

Godspeed absorbing his clones.

Because the Godspeed war was going too far, Barry decided to give "organic speed" via the Speed Force to August, much to his surprise. His artificial speed cells were dormant which was why he lost his memories, thus he recovered his speed as well as his entire memory and fully embraced his criminal career much to Cecile's horror.

Appearing outside of his lightning at the top of S.T.A.R. Labs, Godspeed absorbed all of his clones and proceeded to fight the 'main' Flash, claiming the Flash's death. The speedsters both chase in Central City where Godspeed proved to be faster than the Flash for the moment due to having absorbed his clones and organic speed. Godspeed was about to kill the Flash and absorb his opponent's speed, but he was knocked down by Eobard Thawne.

Godspeed vs the Flash and Reverse-Flash.

Godspeed vs the Flash and Reverse-Flash.

Unfazed and flattered by the uneasy alliance between the Flash and the Reverse-Flash just to stop him, all three speedsters proceeded to fight with lightning swords. Godspeed subdued the Flash with a surprise sonic boom, but he was distracted long enough to be stabbed by the Reverse-Flash which didn't kill him. Afterwards, his mind had been wiped of the Flash's identity by the Speed Force and was incarcerated in Iron Heights.[7]

Possible futures

At some point after being imprisoned in 2021, August returned to the future after presumably escaping from Iron Heights and was supposed to die in 2052 during a fight with Impulse.[2]

Legion of Zoom

As part of the Negative Speed Force's plan, August was pulled from time alongside Hunter Zolomon, the Reverse-Flash and Savitar. Appearing inside the physical manifestation of the Negative Speed Force, August came face to face with Hunter and the two speedsters butted heads as foreseen by the Negative Still Force.[11] August and Hunter erroneously believed being captured by the Flash before Thawne correctly explaining that the speedsters had been brought to the Negative Speed Force. August tried to boost of his own superiority to the two speedsters before Savitar's arrival to counter. Eddie Thawne/Cobalt Blue ultimately proposed that the four speedsters were unable to defeat the Flash separately so everyone should team up as a group.

Cobalt Blue later opened a breach into the Negative Speed Force which allowed Godspeed, Zoom, Savitar and the Reverse-Flash to arrive and stand opposite of Team Flash. When a fight between the two teams broke out, Godspeed cornered Virtue. Godspeed then sent his clones after Virtue. Virtue managed to dispatch all of his copies before Godspeed personally confronted the psychic and was taken down by a psychic attack.

His speed was later siphoned off by Cobalt Blue, sending him back to his proper place in the timeline.[2]

Legacy

Godspeed was remembered by the Negative Speed Force.[12]

Personality

"Spoiled little brat. He's not just reckless, he's unworthy. All the times we've fought, he was so cavalier with his gift, a gift that should've been MINE!"
—August Heart to Barry Allen[src]

In the current timeline, August is still obsessed with getting faster, having fractured himself in time to create an army of Godspeed clones.

But August also became Bart West-Allen's archenemy, he had hated Bart simply because the latter made him realize that artificial speed is a pale imitation of the power of true speedsters who possess a natural connection to the Speed Force. August's rivalry with Bart escalated so much that he had murdered Jay Garrick right in front of him.

August is also delusional, as he believes that Bart is unworthy of being a speedster.

"Yes, I am a god. The god of speed!"
—Godspeed to Nora West-Allen[src]

In the original timeline, August is obsessed with his speed similar to the late Hunter Zolomon. Also, like Hunter and Savitar respectively, August is extremely arrogant, to the point of having a god-complex, as he proclaims himself the "God of Speed" and believes himself incapable of being defeated, by other speedsters and meta-humans, such as Nora West-Allen.[1]

August is extremely arrogant to the point of underestimating his opponents, which had ultimately led to his downfall as he underestimated Nora's capabilities, leading to his capture and incarceration for his crimes. He also has a god-complex, as he proclaims himself the "God of Speed".
