"Phone Home" is the fourth episode of the third season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and the thirty-seventh episode overall. It aired on October 31, 2017.

Synopsis

The Legends learn that Ray Palmer will die because they broke time, causing them to race back to 1988 to try and save his life. When they arrive, they are surprised to learn that young Ray Palmer has befriended a time-displaced baby Dominator, putting him in harm's way with the government and the Dominator's mother. New to the ship and missions, Zari must find her place and learn to trust the team. Meanwhile, Stein begins working on a secret project on the ship which makes Rory and Jax suspicious.^[src]

Plot

The Legends are assembled on the Waverider examining potential teambuilding exercises. At the point when Mick is going to do a trust fall on Ray, Ray vanishes. The gathering converses with Gideon who uncovers Ray was executed as a youngster.

The gathering goes back to 1988 so as to stop Ray's demise. They make a trip back to the day preceding he vanishes as a child, so the more seasoned Ray shows up back on the Waverider.

The gathering gets equipped in 80's rigging to examine Ray's passing.

Mick and Jax are following a youthful Ray home from school and the child stops at a newspaper kiosk, he's taking treats.

Youthful Ray at that point heads home and is halted by menaces as the more seasoned Ray, Nate, and Zari look on. Sara and Amaya drive around the square and state nothing is not right.

The more seasoned Ray follows a more youthful Ray home and spies the more youthful adaptation of himself taking care of treats to something under his bed. After a second, we see what the youthful Ray was taking care of — a child Dominator.

The gathering reunites on the Waverider and they examine how to manage the infant Dominator.

Jax approaches Stein about not getting the group out, he's dubious the senior specialist is concealing something from the gathering. Mick flies in and reveals to Jax he has approaches to get individuals to come clean.

Ray and Zari go into youthful Ray's home to discover the infant Dominator. In the wake of glancing around, they discover the Dominator in a wardrobe, yet a youthful Ray can be heard out of sight popping popcorn. Zari covers up under the bed while Ray is compelled to recoil down. The child Dominator gets a contracted Ray and plays with it as a toy.

Youthful Ray and the Dominator are sitting in front of the TV when Ray's mother gets back home and hollers at Ray for remaining at home and playing hooky. At the point when she hears an uproar in the wardrobe, she nearly finds Ray's mystery. Nate and Amaya race to the entryway and occupy Ray's mother before she finds the infant Dominator.

On the Waverider, Gideon tells Sara and Stein that some other time transport is drawing closer.

Young Ray gets together the child Dominator and a contracted Ray in his knapsack and heads out to the forested areas and Zari follows in interest, attempting to convince a youthful Ray to hand them over.

With the assistance of Gideon, Mick reveals to Jax that is someone has been sneaking off the Waverider to squeal on them to the Time Bureau.

While strolling in the woods, Nate is attempting to convince Amaya to return to where they were together and Amaya reveals to him they should simply remain companions.

Sara is looking somewhere else when a full-developed Dominator appears and takes her out.

Mick drives Jax to a previous extra space, one in which Stein has changed over into a lab. They find that he's been chipping away at a radio transmitter that spreads existence.

Zari discovers youthful Ray and Gumball the Dominator hanging out in a fortification and convinces them to leave the stronghold. When they do, the men in suits show up and regulate drugs that take them hard and fast.

At the lab, Gumball's sedation is beginning to wear off. The pioneer of the suits continues to educate different specialists to slaughter youthful Ray after they investigate him.

On the Waverider, Mick and Jax approach Stein about squealing on the Waveride. Stein uncovers that he left with the escape to give his little girl the other specialized gadget. His little girl calls revealing to him she's in the process of giving birth. Mick and Jax disclose to him they'll remove the Waverider from 1988 so he can make the introduction of his first grandkid.

Somewhere else, Ray becomes back to ordinary size and him and Zari locate the more youthful Ray and spare him from getting shot.

Sara awakens back and radios to the remainder of the gathering — the sovereign Dominator read her psyche and realizes where Ray's home is.

Nate is getting lured by Ray's mother inside while Amaya discovers a lady enclosed by a Dominator's web outside — it's the genuine Ray's mother. The individual Nate has been conversing with inside has been the Queen Dominator acting like Ray's mother.

Amaya surges in the house to caution Nate and a battle breaks out. Nate and Amaya figure out how to get away and lead the Dominator on a pursuit through the forested areas.

At the rec focus at the suit's temporary lab, youthful Ray kills the gadget obstructing Gumball's capacities and Gumball causes the suits to do an arranged move to 'Hello' from Singing In The Rain.

The two Rays and Zari meet Nate and Amaya in the timberland and hand over Gumball to his mom.

Stein makes it back so as to observe the introduction of his first grandkid and Jax takes a risk to apologize for speculation he was squealing on them.

Stein, Mick, and Jax celebrate with stogies.

In 1988, the Legends away from brain of Ray's mom so she won't recollect any of the night's occasions.

To make youthful Ray increasingly OK with stunt or rewarding among menaces, the Legends suit up in their garbs and stunt or treat with him.

Production

Preparation ran from July 31 until August 9, 2017. Shooting ran from August 10 until August 22, 2017.^[1]

Trivia

Young Ray is seen giving Gumball a Nougat Nummy, a reference to another series produced by Marc Guggenheim, Trollhunters.^[2]
There are multiple references to the 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in this episode.
- The episode's premise is very similar to the film's, in which the protagonist protects an alien from government agents, before allowing its family to take it home.
  - Nate even notes the similarity of the situation is to E.T., being surprised when Amaya claims to never have seen it.
- The title is a reference to a famous line in the aforementioned movie, in which the E.T. requests to "phone home".
- Gumball hiding in Ray's closet among the stuffed animals reenacts a nearly identical scene with E.T. in which the alien hides from the protagonist's mother this way.
- When Zari, Ray, and Ray's younger self are trying to take Gumball to safety, Zari uses her totem to create a wind that lifts the bikes she and young Ray are riding into the air, reminiscent of the iconic scene when E.T. uses telekinesis to make the kids' bicycles fly.
When keeping watch on young Ray, Nate cleans a DeLorean DMC-12, saying, "This is a time machine". This is a reference to the Back to the Future franchise, in which the time machine is a DeLorean DMC-12.
Ray picks up a Nintendo Entertainment System controller, reminiscing how his brother always wanted to play Tecmo Bowl, whereas he always wanted to play The Legend of Zelda.
- Zari later lies that she bought a copy of The Legend of Zelda on the black market, never having beaten the final boss (whom Ray notes as Ganon).
Amaya yells, "Get away from him, you bitch!" to the Dominator queen attacking Nate, which is a play on the infamous line, "Get away from her, you bitch!" spoken by Ellen Ripley in the 1986 film Aliens.
After Nate realizes he made out with the Dominator queen, posing as Sandy Palmer, he says, "I kissed a Dominator and I liked it." This a reference to the Katy Perry song "I Kissed a Girl."
Ray and Nate makes mention of a number of Billy Joel's albums, including Piano Man, River of Dreams, The Stranger and The Nylon Curtain.
Young Ray and Gumball watch the 1952 musical Singin' in the Rain together, specifically the scene in which they sing "Good Morning". Gumball later makes the NSA agents perform the routine from the scene.
- Older Ray and Zari later watch Singin' in the Rain on the Waverider, coincidentally after Zari promises younger Ray that she would watch it with him.
  - This is the second time Singin' in the Rain has appeared in the Arrowverse, after The Flash/Supergirl crossover episode "Duet".
Mick claimed that Singin' in the Rain was not as good as the 1971 film Fiddler on the Roof.
Two kids are dressed for Halloween as Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars and the musician Prince, respectively.
Zari reveals the FDA outlawed all candy by 2042. In "River of Time", Mick wondered why all the snacks from 2166 are sugar-free.
Young Ray identifies himself as Sir Galahad to Zari. He goes on to meet the actual Galahad in Camelot and used his sword to fight for the kingdom.
Zari's costume when trick-or-treating, like her amulet, is based on the 1970s Saturday morning show The Secrets of Isis.
Martin's newly-born grandson is named Ronnie after Ronnie Raymond, who was the original other half of Firestorm along with Martin.
Brandon Routh really enjoyed filming this episode, stating: "the part when we're in the lab and the agents are singing "Good Morning" and we're exiting with the Dominator, and I improvised just doing a little dance on the way out. That day was fun and full of some of those moments that happens when you're working with other actors, like working with the young Ray Palmer and the other artists who are dancing and singing."^{[citation needed]}

Goofs

Ivy Town Elementary is labeled is "Ivy Ridge Middle School".

Ray's elementary school is said to be Ivy Town Elementary. However, the school has the sign "Ivy Ridge Middle School".
An Ivy Town Times article lists Ray as being eight years old on October 31, 1988, which would place Ray's date of birth between November 1979 and October 1980. However, Ray's birth year was previously given as 1981,^[3] making this a continuity error (if it is off by one or two years).
Young Ray delivers the line, "You shall not pass!", from the movie version of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, which wasn't released until 2001.
- The book's version of the line is "You cannot pass!"
When time-traveling to 2017 for Ronnie's birth, Martin, Jax, and Mick are in a hurry, but since they used the Waverider, they should've been able to arrive on time regardless of when they left 1988.
- A possible explanation is that they got delayed after landing in 2017 (for instance, by getting caught in traffic).
